IAS Talk : Superflex
Superflex
Aug 11, 2006
Insa Art Space invites you to the fifth series of artist talk, this time with Superflex(www.superflex.net), the Danish artists collective known for their brilliant innovations for social improvement. This talk is made possible from the occasion that Bjønstjerne Christiansen, one of the three members of Superflex stayed in Korea to produce their new project for the Gwangju Biennial this September. In this talk, Christiansen will introduce the past and current projects going on by Superflex.

Superflex’s projects are started from their specific interest in social and economic commitment. Their projects, rather being an object of aesthetic contemplation, claim to function more as practical social interventions or channels for social debate and activism. Their approach is not necessarily confrontational, subversive, but mostly productive, practical, humorous, and structural in a way. Supergas, for example, is a project that produces gas from biological waste for household use, and may just as well be understood as an social action to defy global monopolization of natural resources and their development. As a part of their project, they create tools such as ’Superchannel, ’Supermusic’, ’SuperSauna, ’SuperCopy’, ’SuperCity’. These tools are made as a reaction to a specific context and aim to be used in everyday life by actual users. In the course of being made, used and consumed, these tools generate various layers of meanings to collaborators and users.
The IAS workshops promote voluntary participation and personal ownership of the process rather than structured indoctrination. Away from giving one-sided instruction, the IAS workshops encourage participants to get motivated and activated in the course of discussion.

It is hoped that participants will proactively delineate the issues and agenda relevant to the field of the visual arts, refine them, and thereby “pre-empt ” the future discourses and activities in the practice of the visual arts.
