The Real Estate Project makes a practical use of a land and brings out its peculiarity by connecting land owners with users through the intermediary of vacant spaces. Our intention is to use vacant neighborhood business spaces through mutual coordination and carry out cultural and art activities involving local people.
The project started from last September. At first, we openly recruited members who were interested in creating art activities in the area of public art, and formulated our own identity by studying similar projects and through comparing and contrasting between different projects. Our project group consists of eight volunteers and is divided into two teams according to responsible areas: Seoul City and Chungbuk Province. Each team also has a unique name to suit its specific character. Danoldong, the Seoul team, means to have a festival with villagers. Toari, the Chungbuk team, means to protest against universality.
Donoldong and Toari selected Guro district in Seoul City and Chungju City in Chungbuk Province as their project areas through researches and discussions based on workshops. Guro district has transformed from an industrial complex full of old factories to a newly developed digital complex. This district has a very unique characteristic that the transformation in the district caused division among residents: Chinese immigrants lost their jobs due to the development while Korean local residents supported the development. In case of Chungju City, the remains of the castle are disappearing due to poor urban planning, causing the city to lose its own shape and identity. In these two areas, Donoldong and Toari teams try to interpret issues and peculiarities of these areas, and by using creative and unique ideas, make new relationship with the public. What is more, it is important that this project will make you think about the neighborhood where you belong.
