IASmedia Screening & Lecture Program 2008:
The Way of Production and Perception in Digital Media Art
Hyeryeon Sim
Oct. 10, 2008 PM3 - PM5
In August of 2006, with the view of revitalizing the video art scene in Korea, Insa Art Space launched a specialized program, “IASmedia”, to construct an archive centered on video works and to distribute them. IASmedia now is going to hold “IASmedia Screening 2008” at a theater in Seoul, Filmforum, from 17th October to 19th October, with the view of introducing new IASmedia titles and some ongoing exchange screening program. Also IASmedia will present a lecture program on media aesthetic and art.

After working at philosophy in Korea, Hyeryeon Sim studied philosophy and art history at Free University Berlin and took her doctor’s degree on media aesthetic of Walter Benjamin at Humboldt University in Berlin. She focuses on the media aesthetic and digital art in Korea and is writing several essays passionately on related issue. Her book, Aesthetic in Cyber Space Age, was published in 2006. She has co-authored some books including Semiology, Philosophy and Art (2002), Reading a Matrix through Philosophy (2003), Meanings of Space and City (2004), and Understanding of Media Aesthetic (2005). She has also translated Grenzgang der Asthetik by Wolfgang Welsch. She is professor in Science Studies at Chonbuk National University and is interested in technology, art and digital media art. She will develop her argument about the change of production and perception of image in digital media art.
The IAS workshops promote voluntary participation and personal ownership of the process rather than structured indoctrination. Away from giving one-sided instruction, the IAS workshops encourage participants to get motivated and activated in the course of discussion.

It is hoped that participants will proactively delineate the issues and agenda relevant to the field of the visual arts, refine them, and thereby “pre-empt ” the future discourses and activities in the practice of the visual arts.
