Middle Korea: Yangachi Episode I is based on a story about "Gims Factory" that manufactures "Kamikaze bikes" in a fictional nation, "Middle Korea". The story unfolds in a dialogue through a series of episodes. Likewise, blueprints, drawings, photographic images and products related to the Gims Factory are presented in the exhibition, which substantiates and creates an illusion of authenticity on the fictional Middle Korea and Gims Factory. Through these processes, Yangachi reveals both the system that directly controls the symbol of outmoded system of state, citizenship and nationality, as well as the residuals of this system.
Implying ‘that which one wishes to see’ or ‘that which one has to see,’ the journal BOL is published in Korean and English, discussing visual culture from a humanities perspective. It is a forum to create an arts network to respond collectively to the issues that are pressing cross-culturally.
Insa Art Space publishing activities, carried out in tandem with its other operations, circulate and expand, both on-line and off-line, the IAS archives, productions, and the documentation of the IAS workshops in both Korean and English, thereby building a historical memory and creating horizontal international networks.
